Penn Terminals is a privately-owned marine terminal and stevedoring company that specializes in the handling of containers, steel, forest products, and perishable cargoes.
Penn Terminals hired VIP’s integrated team of architects and construction professionals to, in just 3 months, design and build a 110,000 SF waterfront cold storage warehouse and distribution facility in Eddystone, PA, to be utilized by the C.I. Banacol S.A. Corporation, an international marketer of bananas and other tropical fruits.
Due to the poor soils in the area and in lieu of using piles or other structural foundations that would add to project cost, the design-build team was able to use existing grade beams for the docks and crane rail foundations to support the building. In addition, the cooler system was designed specifically for banana storage and included a unique system designed to force cold air through the stacked banana boxes.
