Syracuse University partnered with VIP Structures to renovate a 3,555 SF space in Marshall Hall to serve as the new home of the SU MakerSpace. The relocation required a fast-track schedule, full ADA compliance, and infrastructure upgrades to support an array of specialized equipment, including 3D printers, sewing machines, and audio production tools. The redesigned space opens access to creative technologies for students across all disciplines.

VIP leveraged its in-house AEC team and self-perform crews to complete the project ahead of schedule and significantly under budget, delivering the space for well below the university’s original estimate. Work included interior demolition, drywall and finishing, and coordination of complex mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and security upgrades. To accelerate the permitting process, VIP worked with the City of Syracuse to organize a 3rd party review, helping to meet the university’s timeline for Spring Semester occupancy.

Creative problem-solving was central to the project’s success. VIP reduced plumbing runs to the emergency eyewash station, used standard off-the-shelf racking to cut lead times, and consolidated power and data through modular power poles, allowing for remote functionality while maintaining flexibility. Equipment was reorganized using shelving and stacked layouts to reduce the footprint and improve accessibility; at least one of each printer type is now ADA-accessible.

Through thoughtful design and execution, VIP delivered a fully functional, inclusive, and innovation-ready space that supports a wide range of student-driven projects while staying under budget and ahead of schedule.
