VIP Structures competitively bid Freedom Commons and was awarded the project in April of this year by the Norstar Building Corporation. Norstar and the Syracuse Housing Authority have partnered to bring this affordable housing development to life in a part of the city where it is much needed, 450 Burt Street, Syracuse. VIP’s role in this project is that of the general trades contractor, working collaboratively with Norstar Building Corporation and the other prime contractors.
At approximately 72,000 SF, the project involves the new construction of a building comprised of 54 affordable housing units, supportive service space and temporary shelter space. More specifically, this 2 and 3-story multi-family residential apartment building will consist of 7 townhomes, 47 apartments, and community space on the first floor which includes some transitional housing units. It is expected to be finished in July of 2018.
This project will be financed through the Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit program and NYS financing sources. It is also subject to W/MBE participation as well as Section 3 requirements.
The Syracuse Housing Authority exists to provide quality, safe and affordable housing, to create opportunities for residents’ self-sufficiency and economic independence, and to empower individual potential in an environment where people want to live, work, and build communities.
